Art San Diego, the region’s longest running art and design fair, returns to the San Diego Convention Center Friday with works by artists both local and far flung.
The three-day event features five unique Art Labs showcasing the best of the local art scene and more, including a collection from John Lennon’s archive and an original creation from students at Monarch School in Barrio Logan.
The show opens at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. There also will be “First Look” and VIP events Friday to begin the weekend festivities. General admission costs $20, with three-day passes available for $30.
Highlights this year include the various Art Labs:
- The Lennon Art Collection, Give Peace a Chance – for the first time in more than a decade, the collection will be displayed and available for purchase at Art San Diego. The exhibition, endorsed by the late Lennon’s estate, will showcase more than 50 originals, lithographs and prints by the iconic musician.
- Access to Art, Hide and Seek: A Surrealistic Celebration of Colors and Dreams, Art San Diego’s partners are Monarch School and professional artists from Humble Design and Arts District Liberty Station. Their creation, a colorful room crafted by students and families from the school will include unexpected juxtapositions of texture and design, alongside symbolic shapes and three-dimensional objects.
- Reflection of Hope, A Community Art Project by Sarah Stieber, the San Diego artist is debuting a collection of paintings made entirely out of tape. There also will be 200 special tape art kits for kids at Saturday’s Family Day.
- The Butterfly Effect, sister + sister, an immersive installation using natural materials that encourages visitors to step inside and explore our profound impact on the natural environment; by sisters Kate Taylor and Helen Utsal.
In addition, the San Diego Art Prize, founded in 2006 by the San Diego Visual Arts Network, will be presented to Anya Gallaccio, Janelle Iglesias, Joe Yorty and Mely Barragan.
The award includes a cash prize and exhibition opportunities for established and emerging San Diego visual artists.
