A 62-year-old motorist was killed over the weekend in a head-on collision on a rural road near San Vicente Reservoir, authorities reported Monday.

The man was headed north in a 2002 Volkswagen sedan on Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday when an oncoming 2003 Ford pickup truck veered directly into his path north of Muth Valley Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The resulting crash sent the Volkswagen off the east side of the roadway and caused the truck to overturn, CHP public-affairs Officer Jared Grieshaber said.

The driver of the Volkswagen died at the scene of the accident. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Paramedics took the 42-year-old San Diego man who had been driving the Ford to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the collision, Grieshaber said.
